Charity challenges come in all forms. If running a marathon, hosting a bake sale or climbing Kilimanjaro isn’t your thing, there are many different ways that you can impact people’s lives in our community. And we love it when people think outside the box to support our cause.
37-year-old Simon from Woolston has leapt from that box and onto a virtual racetrack, as he prepares to take part in 24 Hours Le Mans: 360 laps (3,048 miles) around Circuit de la Sarthe in a 24-hour virtual race. And he’s livestreaming every single second.
“I considered a number of charitable causes that I could do this challenge in aid of, but Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was one where I thought my donation would have a direct and noticeable effect – and could have a meaningful impact rather than just a drop in the ocean,” says Simon.
Having lived in Hampshire for almost 18 years, Simon has become familiar with our helicopter flying overhead.
“The sound of the helicopter coming and going is kind of reassuring: you never know when it might be you, or someone you love, that needs it. Knowing that my challenge could help local people that need them is one of the reasons that I was keen to get involved.”
The challenge
“The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the greatest endurance motor race in the world. I’ve attended it in the past (2010, 2011) as a spectator, and it’s got an incredible feeling and ‘buzz’.
“I’d love to race in real life, but sadly lack the talent, and money, to go motor racing for real – so this is the closest I can get.
“It might not be a physical challenge in the ‘traditional’ sense, but it’s not going to be easy. I think I’m up to the challenge, though I might need a constant supply of coffee to avoid sleeping at the wheel.”
The support so far
“It’s already exceeded my wildest expectations. There has been strong support from family and friends and even some more far-flung supporters, and the green light hasn’t even gone out yet. It’s given me a real boost, and affirmation that this wild idea is all worthwhile.
“I’d like to thank everyone and reiterate how their support really makes a difference to the charity.
“It’s the only air ambulance service in this local area and so it’s one-of-a-kind. Every time I hear or see the helicopter, I’m reminded that we’re all helping to keep it flying and helping those people in need.”
