Boys, 9 and 10, to take on 100-mile off-road cycle

Two boys from Chandler’s Ford and North Baddesley who met at their local cycling club (Sotonia) are preparing for a 100-mile off-road cycle from Winchester to Eastbourne, the South Downs Way – and they’re bringing their dads along for the ride.

Starting on May 16, Theo (9), his dad, Dr Jamie Plumb, Reuben (10) and his dad, Dan Lewis, will embark on the rigorous ride over three days to raise funds for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. Dr Plumb has been flying and treating patients as part of our team since 2019.

The funds raised will be split between our Operation Airbase appeal and Research and Development programme, of which Dr Plumb is a key member.

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest

The team were inspired to raise money for us after Theo lost his ‘grandpa’ following an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in 2023.

Part of his father’s research is focused on improving patient care for those who have suffered an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, with current stats indicating fewer than 1-in-10 people in the UK survive.

For Dr Plumb, his experience as a cyclist and pre-hospital emergency medicine doctor means he is acutely aware of the importance of road safety and the vulnerability of being out on the roads. However, he is reassured knowing that his colleagues on the Air Ambulance are available to help those in need.

‘A massive challenge’

The South Downs Way cycle is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, challenging climbs and picturesque views, offering cyclists a unique opportunity to explore the beauty of the English countryside along a historic route.

Dr Plumb said: “It will be really hard work and I am sure there will be some tears (probably from me or Dan!). It’s a massive challenge for the boys who are 9 and 10, respectively. Mentally it will be tough, but I hope it’s something that they will remember forever.

“I think the biggest challenge we could face would be rain – if it’s wet it makes everything 10x harder and it could even risk us not making it.”

The group have already raised an incredible £2,087 and are aiming to hit £3,000 by the start of the race.

Reuben said: “I am really excited about the challenge and adventure we are taking on – it’s great to be doing this with my friend and my dad. I’m also looking forward to seeing how much money we can raise for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance!”

“As Reuben’s Dad I’m looking forward to spending some time with the boys doing something we all love – riding our bikes,” added Dan.

“I’m sure we will each face our own challenges over the three days, but it will be great to work through these together and hopefully reach the sea at Eastbourne and enjoy a well-deserved fish and chip supper on the beach!”
