Free Wills Month: Keith and Fiona’s lasting legacy

What is Free Wills Month?

Farewill offers specialist support and the opportunity to write or update your Will for free, either online or over the phone.

Why we need your help

1 in 5 missions are funded by gifts in Wills. Every gift, no matter the size, will make a difference to our patients and their loved ones.

In April 2021, we responded to 83-year-old Keith Greene when he had a cardiac arrest outside his home in Totland Bay on the Isle of Wight.

Keith, a former F1 racer and motor sport team manager, was washing his car when he collapsed.

His wife, Fiona, dialled 999 and watched on as a raft of paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and a doctor and specialist paramedic team from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance did everything they could for Keith.

Unfortunately, there was nothing more they could do. Keith sadly died at his home a short time later.

Keith enjoyed huge success over a 45-year motorsport career.

Along with their friends from the local model helicopter flying club, Keith and Fiona, who were together for 46 years, have been staunch supporters of our charity for many years.

Since Keith’s death, Fiona has generously decided to leave her entire estate to charity, with a large percentage being donated to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

We spoke to Fiona who shared more about Keith and her reasons for leaving a gift in her Will.

“It’s a cause that’s very close to our heart,” she said. “He was just so pro Air Ambulance.

“I remember the doctor and paramedics being the most delightful young men. The whole operation, from landing in a field to someone picking them up and bringing them to the house and working on Keith, was just amazing.”

Fiona’s experiences of her local Air Ambulance aren’t only limited to Keith. Two of her close friends have also been treated and airlifted to hospital, further cementing her decision to leave a gift in her Will.

“The service is just so important to everyone, but in particular to the Isle of Wight,” she said.

“We just don’t have the facilities to treat medical episodes like this – let alone road traffic collisions and major incidents. The Air Ambulance is just so important to us. No doubt we’d be in a far worse state if it wasn’t here.

“Keith was such a supporter with his cap and his helicopter badge. He may have thought that one day he might need them – and he did. But it could be anyone, and it makes me feel so proud that I’m able to contribute in his memory – it’s very important to me.

“I just hope I can help towards saving lives in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.”
