Thanks to your support, we have taken home the People’s Choice Award (Longform over £5 million) at the Smiley Charity Film Awards – for the second year in a row.
A life-changing moment
On 8 October 2023, disaster struck as Michael, a former Royal Marines Commando, attempted his 379th skydive. Just 200 feet from the ground he noticed something was wrong, but it was too late. He hurtled toward the ground at 40mph, suffering catastrophic injuries.
Our Critical Care Team were on their way back to base from a separate incident when the call came in, and they were immediately diverted to Michael’s side. The crew administered strong pain relief before flying Michael to the nearest Major Trauma Centre at University Hospital Southampton.
Michael captured the entire incident on his 360° helmet headcam. This film contains real footage from the incident that viewers may find distressing.
A memorable night
Highlighting the incredible work of local and national organisations, the annual awards are a celebration of cause driven films produced across the third sector.
The prestigious People’s Choice Award is given to the organisation who receives the most votes from supporters in their community, with Michael’s story taking home gold on behalf of our life-saving service.
Our Director of Income and Engagement, Keith Wilson, was in the audience to see Michael take home the top prize, alongside Specialist Paramedic Sarah and our partners, Ben and Darren, from Millstream Productions, who produced the film.
Keith said:
“Michael’s story is a testament to the incredible care that our crew deliver to the two million people across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, 365 days a year.
“Our heartfelt thanks go to Michael for bravely sharing his story and to our partners, Millstream productions, for creating such a brilliant film.
“This award highlights the unwavering dedication and support from our community. We are hugely grateful for each and every vote we received.”
