National Volunteers’ Week: a time to say thanks!

Whenever the call for urgent critical care comes in, it’s the support of our communities that gets us to the patient’s side – with help from the helicopter, of course.

Within those communities are our wonderful volunteers. Whether they’re marshalling a marathon on a Sunday morning, or holding a talk on a Tuesday evening, our volunteers are always ready to spread the word of our life-saving work.

Every year, National Volunteers’ Week is our chance to celebrate our volunteers who help save lives across our region.

Volunteer spotlight: Pam

Pam at Millbrook Fun Dog Show

When Pam’s husband died in 2006, he requested that money be donated to a local charity rather than spent on flowers. Pam’s husband had spent time in the RAF and had an affinity towards aircraft, and so the newly formed local air ambulance charity seemed an obvious recipient to Pam.

Over £700 was raised and donated off the back of Pam’s late husband’s funeral. And later that year, before we even had our first helicopter, Pam became a volunteer.

16 years later, and at the age of 84, Pam is hanging up her volunteer lanyard for good, having given up so much of her time for the good of the charity and the community.

She was a constant presence at events such as the New Forest Show and Ellingham Show – and loved meeting new people at village fetes and garden centres, where she would run the charity stand.

In 2013 Pam was presented with a silver platter by HRH The Princess Royal for her contributions to volunteering.

We’re going to miss Pam’s dedication to our cause which has been ever present from the very beginning in our history.

Thank you for helping to keep critical care in the air.
