The Fast Lane Challenge – a 5km swim versus 21km run

Think Usain Bolt versus Rebecca Adlington. Or Michael Phelps against Paula Radcliffe.

On Saturday 28 September, Winchester Running Club and Winchester City Swimming Club are hosting a ground-breaking sporting challenge at the city’s Bar End Leisure Centre. And, it’s all for a good cause – two good causes.

Local running legend and Winchester Running Club member, Justin Corrie, is going up against long-time stalwart of Winchester City Swimming Club, Dr Cathy Munro, in the ultimate test – a half-marathon run around the track versus a 5km swim.

These distances are broadly understood within the sporting community to be roughly equivalent, making it a genuine trial for participants and a truly exciting event for spectators.

Cathy is donning her swimming costume in aid of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance while Justin will be taking to the track on behalf of Friends of the Family.

As a retired Emergency Department doctor, Cathy has seen first-hand the impact our service has on patients in desperate need of critical care.

She said:

“Both Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and Friends of the Family are incredible charities one hopes to not need but always want to be available. I think this event is a world first, who knows whether the run or the swim is the harder event? Both are going to feel tough. But either way this fundraising opportunity is a winner, and I know we are both incredibly grateful for all the support received thus far and any future donations”

The winning athlete will donate 60% of the money raised to their chosen cause with the other charity receiving 40% – so there’s truly everything to play for.

Local insurance broker Pangea are sponsoring the event and will be manning a breakfast tent to keep spirits up on the sidelines.

Please show your support for this amazing event via their fundraising page.
