Volunteers’ Week – volunteer for your air ambulance

It’s Volunteers’ Week 2023 (1 – 7 June). And as we fly into a summer full of events, what better time to sign up to volunteer for your air ambulance.

If you’ve got time to spare and a passion to share, you can help promote, support and represent your local air ambulance and save lives in your community.

Whether you’ve got hours or days to commit, we would love to hear from you.

Our volunteers provide invaluable support to the charity throughout the year, fulfilling many important and rewarding roles.

From giving talks to local groups to distributing donation pots and mixing with the public at a variety of fundraising events – you can even bring joy to the crowds dressed as one of our mascots. There is something to suit everyone.

But don’t just take our word for it:

Chloe and Rolf wanted to ‘thank the people that saved his life.’

Chloe started volunteering for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance shortly after her dad was airlifted to hospital when he was involved in a major boat explosion in 2008.

Chloe said, “Volunteering has become a part of me and something I am so proud to do. Some of my best experiences have been as a volunteer and being able to choose which events I attend, what works for me, my skills and my lifestyle is what I love. Not only can I raise awareness and funds for a charity so close to my heart, but I get to have fun whilst doing it!”

Jim

“Volunteering is a rewarding way to meet new people and develop friendships. As a retiree, volunteering keeps me active, provides structure and uses my skills to do something positive and worthwhile – also helping my mental health.

“I see volunteering at events as one of the ways the charity communicates with the community that we serve. Talking to people that we’ve attended, or their relatives, can be emotional.”

Jo

“Luckily, neither I nor any of my family have ever needed the Air Ambulance, but my husband and I volunteer to make sure it’s there should we ever need it.

“We like to volunteer at events where we can teach the public about the charity, which in turn encourages donations. We also have quite a lot of people that tell us about their or their loved ones experiences with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.”

Mick

“I started volunteering because I believed I still had a lot to give. I have always worked with the public, and when I looked at volunteering with HIOWAA I strongly believed this was a well worth organisation, and how true that has turned out to be. I get great pleasure in representing the charity, especially when getting involved with the public.

“Since becoming part of the team, I have made some really good friends, whether volunteers or full-time staff – we all work well together. We are always respected and looked after by the organisation.”
